Job candidate and employer conducting a video interview

5 Tips to Prepare for an Online Video Interview

It’s not uncommon for employers to schedule job interviews by video in today's technologically advanced world. Video interviews can be efficient and allow for remote teams to plug-in from all over the world. If you’re asked to interview for a position by video, the same rules apply as an in-person interview – be prepared, practice, have questions ready to ask the interviewer, look professional, make eye contact, and be on time.

If you’ve never done it before, then you’ll also need to learn how to prepare for an online interview – from setting up the video interview background to understanding video interview dress code to ensuring you have the technology required to support the interview. Below are some proactive video interview tips to support your job search process.

Find an Appropriate Location

Set up your computer in a quiet area that will be free of interruptions. The area should be well lit so that you are clearly visible to the interviewer(s). The video interview background you choose is also an important consideration. It should be neatly organized and free of any clutter that might be distracting for those interviewing you. A simple, solid-colored wall will work as your background if you don’t have a neatly organized office space to use.

Check Internet Connection Speed

Video software programs have a minimum Internet speed requirement for video calls to run smoothly. Once you know which software will be used for your interview, do some research to determine the minimum speed requirement for that software. Then, run a speed test on your computer by using a site like speedtest.net to determine whether your Internet meets the minimum speed requirement. Speed requirements are often provided in minimum Mbps (megabits per second) download and upload times.

Check Microphone and Video Capabilities

Every software application is different. Similar to checking your Internet speed, make sure your microphone and camera are working correctly on the software you’ll be using for your interview. If your microphone or video is not working as it should, you may have to adjust some of your computer settings.

Avoid Wearing Distracting Colors and Patterns

The video interview dress code is the same as an in-person interview. You should wear neat, wrinkle-free, professional attire without distracting colors and patterns.

Some items that are understated in person could be distracting on a small screen. Avoid wearing bright colors, such as orange and red, and stay away from patterns altogether.

Use Proper Framing

During your video interview, position yourself so that you are easily visible from the chest upward in the video frame. That way, your interviewer will be able to see your eyes and facial expressions (without being too close). Make sure you’re sitting upright and in a comfortable position.

These video interview tips show you how to prepare for an online interview and take the nerves out of using technology in the interviewing process.
