Local News Editor

The San Antonio Express-News seeks an energetic, battle-tested, digitally focused editor to guide local news coverage in the nations seventh-largest city.

If selected for this senior leadership position, you will oversee teams that covers crime, policing, and criminal justice; transportation and suburban development; K-12 and higher education; San Antonio city and county government and politics; federal courts; and breaking and trending news.

You will make sure we are fast off the mark everyday, generate scoops, and hold institutions and public officials accountable.

You will guide the next stages of the newsrooms digital transformation by harnessing audience metrics and trending topics to shape coverage and sharpen our reflexes.

What you'll do:

• Drive the engine of newsgathering daily, medium-term and long-term. Ensure that newsroom teams react smartly to breaking news, plan for known events and always think audience-first.
• Instill a readiness to use varied story forms: quick hits, explainers, short- and long-form storytelling, data stories, live blogs.
• Ensure that story conception, beat reporting and publishing rhythm are audience-focused.
• Coach best practices in SEO, digital tactics and digital storytelling techniques.
• Work collaboratively with department heads, the digital team and the papers senior leadership
• Work closely with the managing editor/audience of ExpressNews.com on tactics and strategy to build audience and conversion.
• Work closely with Hearsts Texas data team to generate compelling data projects for ExpressNews.com.
• Manage our partnerships with nonprofit news organizations and other Hearst properties.

What you bring:

• At least 10 years in daily journalism, including three to five years as a reporter and a like amount as an assigning editor.

• Growth in visits to ExpressNews.com and subscription conversions
