The New York Post provides readers with the best in News, Sports, Pop Culture and Entertainment - with signature wit, irreverence and authority averaging 90 million unique viewers a month. Over the past 224 years, The Post has evolved into a multi-platform media company spanning print, digital, video, audio, app, television and commerce.
The New York Post is looking for a City Hall Reporter (M-F) to keep a close eye on the mayor's office, City Council, and the political forces shaping the city.
This role isn't for the faint of heart-we need a reporter who can hustle for scoops, ask the tough questions, and break exclusive stories that keep New Yorkers informed. If you thrive in a fast-paced, competitive news environment, keep reading.
Responsibilities:
Cover the mayor's office, City Council, and key city agencies and departments -- including the Department of Education and the MTA -- with a sharp, critical eye.
Regularly work from City Hall and cultivate a deep network of government sources.
Break exclusive stories that hold city leaders accountable and set the news agenda.
Translate complex policy, budgets, and government decisions into compelling, clear stories.
File breaking news quickly, accurately, and concisely under tight deadlines.
Leverage SEO and social media best practices to expand audience reach.
Collaborate with editors and other reporters on investigative projects and enterprise stories.
Requirements:
3+ years of experience reporting on local politics or government.
Deep knowledge of New York City Hall, the mayor's office, and city politics.
Established sources in city government (and the skills to develop more).
A nose for news, with a proven track record of breaking exclusive stories.
Strong writing skills-able to turn dry government reports into must-read journalism.
Ability to thrive under pressure in a fast-paced, deadline-driven newsroom.
Experience with WordPress and knowledge of SEO and social media best practices.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings and occasional weekends.
Note: This role requires on-site reporting from New York City Hall five days a week.
